Description

Sharply Contrasted 1901 Quarter Eagle, PR62

1901 $2 1/2 PR62 PCGS. The recorded proof mintage of 223 pieces for the 1901 is the largest among the 1892-1907 Liberty Head quarter eagles, and the generous figure begs the question of how many examples may have been melted as unsold -- a common Mint practice of the era. This piece is one of 12 submissions at the PR62 grade level between PCGS and NGC combined, with 60 finer -- amounts that would indicate greater rarity than the mintage would imply. This deep reddish-orange piece appears on the cusp of a Cameo designation, and the minor contact marks that dictate the grade, largely confined to the obverse field, are undistracting. An exercise in cost-effectiveness for proof gold specialists.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 7KFZ, PCGS# 7927)
