Description

1901 Half Eagle PR 64. With only 140 proof half eagles minted, this date was destined to be scarce. No estimate of survivors are given in the literature on this date, but we would hazard a guess that no more than 50 examples remain today in all grades. This is a bright, sparkling proof that displays unfathomable depth of mirrored reflectivity in the fields. The devices are lightly frosted, and there is an area of light die polish that runs diagonally down the face of Liberty--a curious mint-caused phenomenon that interrupts the flow of mint frost. The fields are lightly hairlined, and overall the coin has most of the eye appeal of a gem.
