Description
1901 Eagle PR 63. Of the 85 proofs struck, the most generous estimate of the number of survivors today was provided by Breen at 30-40 pieces. This coin shows a bit of the diagnostic repunching on the figures in the date with the base of the 1 most plainly repunched. When viewing this piece we have to keep reminding ourselves that it is "only" a 63, because the eye appeal carries it far beyond the technical grade. True, there are a few wispy hairlines in the fields, but one's attention is directed toward the thick mint frost on the devices and the resultant cameo contrast, rather than focusing on flaws in the fields. A very attractive coin for the grade with the only mentionable contact mark being a tiny one on the cheek of Liberty just below the mouth.
