Description
Sparkling PR65 1902 Quarter Eagle
1902 $2 1/2 PR65 NGC. Beginning in 1902 the Mint produced proofs with a non-cameo finish. At least that was the intention. But that it is not to say Cameo coins do not exist. They certainly do. In fact, to date (5/08) 27 Cameo quarter eagles have been certified by the two major services. However, these pieces were not intentionally struck as cameo coins; rather they were an accidental occurrence that happened when a new pair of dies was used at the start of each calendar year. Without constant monitoring by Mint personnel, the contrast would diminish quite rapidly. This particular coin shows a slight bit of cameoed effect, especially on the reverse. Otherwise the surfaces are sparkling and problem-free with bright yellow-gold color. Census: 9 in 65, 10 finer (5/08).From The Aspen Collection.(Registry values: P1)
