Description

1902 Quarter Eagle, PR65
Green CAC, Green Label Holder
Appreciable Reverse Contrast

1902 $2 1/2 PR65 PCGS. CAC. The 1902 proof quarter eagle is famously rare with cameo contrast due to a modification in the Mint's process of polishing proof dies. However, it is otherwise considered a fairly plentiful issue among Liberty Head proofs, coming from a mintage of 193 pieces and having a relatively substantial certified population. While the 1902 is moderately plentiful in the context of proof Liberty quarter eagles, we feel it is scarcer than the certified population figures suggest. PCGS and NGC combined list 247 proofs of this date -- far more than were coined. Since our Permanent Auction Archives began in 1993, we have handled only 68 proof 1902 quarter eagles, including a few impaired pieces; moreover, most of these coins were sub-Gem quality, and many graded lower than PR63. Gem proofs, whether Cameos or not, are rare.

This CAC-endorsed coin is housed in a green label holder and shows a degree of undesignated cameo contrast -- it is modest on the obverse but stark on the reverse. The strike is needle-sharp, and the orange-gold surfaces fail to show a single mentionable flaw. When preservation and strike quality are both considered, this is easily one of the finest Gem 1902 proof quarter eagles that we have seen outside of a Cameo holder. Population: 13 in 65 (1 in 65+), 7 finer; 3 in 65 Cameo, 2 finer. CAC: 5 in 65, 2 finer (3/18).(Registry values: P1)
