Description

1902 Quarter Eagle, PR65
Green Label Holder, Green CAC
Subtle Cameo Contrast

1902 $2 1/2 PR65 PCGS. CAC. Beginning in 1902, the Mint altered its process for finishing proof dies such that the devices seldom produced a cameo effect on the struck coin. Less than 10% of the 1902 proof quarter eagles reported by PCGS have a Cameo designation, and no Deep Cameos are reported. In their gold Encyclopedia, Garrett and Guth write that "most of the coins seen are less than superb." This CAC-endorsed Gem is something special for the grade, and for the issue overall. It showcases a needle-sharp strike and rich orange-gold color with wisps of brighter silvery hues throughout. Both sides have modest field-device contrast, particularly the reverse. Eye appeal is simply exceptional. Housed in a green label holder with CAC endorsement. Population: 13 in 65 (1 in 65+), 6 finer. CAC: 5 in 65, 2 finer (3/19).(Registry values: P1)
