Description
Gleaming Gem Proof 1902 Quarter Eagle
Transition Year
1902 $2 1/2 PR65 PCGS. The consciously created low-contrast,
all-flash proof style that is often called the "brilliant proof"
made its U.S. debut in 1902 and persisted until a design change or
1916, whichever came first. (It is worth noting that the "true"
matte proofs among Indian quarter eagles were struck in six years,
the same number of years that brilliant proof Liberty quarter
eagles received.) This boldly impressed Gem has stunning
yellow-gold mirrors and subtly contrasting devices that give the
effect through changes in contour rather than any attempt at
frostiness. Carefully preserved and undeniably appealing.
