    1903 Liberty Quarter Eagle, PR63+
    Brightly Mirrored Surfaces

1903 $2 1/2 PR63+ PCGS. CAC. JD-1, R.4. The 1903 proof quarter eagle had a mintage of 197 pieces, and the most recent estimate of the number of survivors (done by John Dannreuther) suggests that 80 to 100 pieces may exist of the JD-1 variety, and 40 to 60 examples may survive of the JD-2 variant. This piece was struck from the JD-1, State a dies. The surfaces are bright throughout, the only variation in color being a faint copper stain between stars 2 and 3. Close examination with a loupe shows a few stray hairlines, but these do not appear to have come from an intentional cleaning. As such, this moderately contrasted proof represents excellent value at this grade level.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 288T, PCGS# 7929)
