Description

1903 Quarter Eagle, PR65
Undesignated Contrast, Watery Fields

1903 $2 1/2 PR65 NGC. Although not designated as a Cameo, this Gem delivers extraordinarily bold contrast between the devices and watery fields. This quality is far more difficult to locate on proofs struck in 1902 or later, after the Mint began using an all-brilliant finish. Smooth yellow-gold surfaces are predictably razor-sharp with crisp, squared-off rims, and there are no contact marks to report. A single lint mark occurs in the field left of the chin. From a mintage of 197 pieces, this would make an excellent high-end Liberty type coin in proof format. Census: 12 in 65 (1 in 65 ★ ), 16 finer (6/18).
