Description

Unmarked 1903 Quarter Eagle, PR66
Only Four Finer Coins at NGC

1903 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. CAC. The Mint by 1903 had changed its format for proof coinage production, so that most examples show little field-device contrast, a method that Breen called "semibrilliant," although it somewhat resembles later satin finishes. The mintages of proof gold quarter eagles increased markedly in the 1890s, as there were more collectors and the denomination was the smallest collectible gold denomination after gold dollar coinage ceased in 1889. The 1903 quarter eagle proofs saw a production of 197 coins.
The present Premium Gem non-Cameo example is one of 10 in this numeric grade at NGC (including Plus and Star coins), with four finer in the designation (8/12). Like most of the issue, this piece shows little contrast over surfaces that show no mentionable distractions, a full strike, and prevailing yellow-gold color.
