    Description

1903 Quarter Eagle, Premium Gem Proof
    Great 20th Century Example

1903 $2 1/2 PR66 PCGS. CAC. In 1902, the U.S. Mint transitioned to an all-around "brilliant" look for its gold proofs with a goal of eliminating the cameo effect. This approach rarely was entirely successful, and even on coins not formally designated Cameo, such as this one, a certain level of contrast still exists. (The reverse likely could be taken as Cameo on its own.) Pale yellow surfaces are carefully preserved and gleam yellow or "black" depending on the angle to the light. The detail is intricate, and viewers of this coin's images should not be fooled by a few case-scratches that might appear to be faults on the piece itself. Population: 6 in 66, 1 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 288T, PCGS# 7929)
