Description

1903 Two and a Half, PR66
Rarely Encountered This Fine

1903 $2 1/2 PR66 PCGS. Proof gold during the 1890s and early 1900s ranged from a low of 93 pieces in 1890 to a high of 205 proofs in 1901. The 1903 comes in at the upper end of that rather tight range with a mintage of 197 pieces. Once attrition is factored in, there may be as many as 100 examples remaining of the proof 1903 in all grades. However, most have not survived in PR66 condition, and only six pieces are finer (combining the data from both services). This example displays remarkable depth of reflectivity in the fields. The surfaces show both bright yellow-gold color as well as accents of reddish patina around the margins. An outstanding piece of 20th century gold. Population: 9 in 66, 1 finer (7/16).(Registry values: P1)
