1903 $2 1/2 PR66 PCGS. PCGS lists only a single Cameo example of this proof issue (a Gem) and no Deep Cameos, meaning that the best coins typically available to collectors are the high-end non-Cameo pieces. This Premium Gem is just such a coin. There are 12 pieces in this grade at PCGS and just two finer (2/19). These coins survive from a mintage of 197 proof 1903 quarter eagles. Although not overly rare, this issue is significantly scarcer than the certified population figures suggest. PCGS and NGC combined have graded an example on 292 occasions, which exceeds the number of pieces struck by 95 coins. In their gold Encyclopedia, Garrett and Guth estimate that more than 100 pieces survive, but the frequency of auction appearances for the date suggests that the survivorship is probably no greater than about 150 coins.

This piece is fully struck and has deeply mirrored orange-gold fields. Although not a Cameo, subtle contrast is still apparent on each side at certain angles. The coin is beautifully preserved and free of contact marks and hairlines.(Registry values: P1)
