    1904 Liberty Quarter Eagle, PR66
    Nice Cameo Example

1904 $2 1/2 PR66 Cameo NGC. JD-1, R.4. The Philadelphia Mint struck 170 proof Liberty quarter eagles in 1904, with the coins delivered in quarterly batches throughout the year. A single die pair was used to strike the proofs, with the 1 in the date positioned near the dentils and the vertical stripes in the shield thinned at the bottoms. Unlike the proofs of the two previous years, the 1904 coins are occasionally seen with frosty devices and cameo contrast. John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population at 100-130 examples in all grades today.

This spectacular Premium Gem proof exhibits sharply detailed, frosty design elements that contrast boldly with the deeply mirrored fields to create a noticeable cameo effect. The pleasing yellow-gold surfaces are virtually flawless and overall eye appeal is terrific. Census: 18 in 66 Cameo (1 in 66+, 2 in 66 ), 8 finer (10/19).(Registry values: P1)
