    Description

    1906 Quarter Eagle, PR64 Cameo
    Only 160 Proofs Struck

1906 $2 1/2 PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Prior to 1902, proofs were struck from heavily polished dies and Cameo contrast was the rule. This practice was halted in 1903, only to be resumed several years later. With the introduction of the Indian Head design in 1908 came a new proof finish. These specimens appeared satiny or matte as opposed to brilliant and contrasted. Thus, this piece represents both the brief resumption of Cameo finish and the penultimate Liberty quarter eagle proofs issue.

Expertly struck with deep mirrors and heavily frosted devices, this piece demonstrates spectacular contrast and equally impressive visual appeal. The yellow-gold surfaces display a few wispy marks, but they certainly do not detract. The Mint produced 160 proofs in 1906, of which PCGS has certified 123 -- a population that no doubt reflects numerous resubmissions. Nevertheless, we note that seven coins have been designated PR64 Cameo, with 16 finer (6/14).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 288W, PCGS# 87932)
