Final Year of This Long-Lived Design

1907 $2 1/2 PR68 NGC. This issue marks the end of brilliant-mirror proofs for the quarter eagle denomination, as the subsequent sunken-relief Pratt design was made in matte or semibright "Roman Gold" finish, and the two-and-a-half-dollar value has not seen a reprise since 1929. This extremely well-preserved example displays bold canary-gold color and gleaming mirrors. Sharply struck devices are lightly frosted, not to a Cameo level on the obverse but approaching it on the reverse. Neither NGC nor PCGS has graded a PR69 example of this issue within any contrast designation (9/14).(Registry values: P1)
