Description

Conditionally Elusive 1909 Lincoln Cent, PR65 Red

1909 1C PR65 Red PCGS. Somehow, a major design change (the removal of Victor D. Brenner's initials along the lower reverse edge) was effected during 1909, without noticeably slowing the production of Lincoln cents during the first year of the new type. Those proofs and business strikes without "VDB" are more numerous than their counterparts, but less so with proofs than with circulation strikes. This appealing example is well struck and shows intense satin luster on both sides, with typically non-reflective fields. The golden-tan toning is interrupted by some lilac-red color near the center of the obverse. An attractive and conditionally scarce Gem proof, housed in a first-year PCGS holder. Population: 54 in 65 Red, 46 finer (10/08). (Registry values: N1793)
