Description

1909 VDB Lincoln Cent, PR64 Red and Brown
Early Die State Diagnostics

1909 1C VDB PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Today, the accepted mintage of 1909 VDB Matte Proof cents is set at 1,194 pieces produced, with a footnote that an estimated 400 and 600 proofs of the type were actually distributed according to the 2014 Guide Book. Other resources are generally in agreement that not all proofs were issued, although there is some discussion about the exact number.

This near-Gem example displays the characteristics of an early die state Matte Proof. Diagnostic die scratches appear in front of Lincoln's nose, with a single die scratch from the jacket to below the T of LIBERTY. Later die states show a die crack through the dot and then through the B of V.D.B., but the crack does not appear on this coin, confirming an early die state. Flat, wide rims encircle both sides of this near-Gem proof. The strike is bold throughout, with strong detail on Lincoln's hair and beard, and also on the jacket details beneath the date.

The red-brown surfaces are suggestive of tissue-wrapped proofs issued by the Mint. The obverse displays purple-brown toning, nicely blended over deeply lustrous, orange-red surfaces. The reverse is more fully Red. A series of pinpoint carbon flecks are visible under magnification above the VDB, with a slightly larger fleck above the T in CENT. There are no significant post-mint contact marks to mention. Matte proofs are seldom available in this near-Gem condition with generous eye appeal. Population: 32 in 64 Red and Brown, 36 finer (12/13).
