Description

1909 VDB Lincoln Cent, PR64 Red and Brown
Attractive, Mostly Red Surfaces

1909 1C VDB PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. The 1909 VDB matte proof Lincoln cent claims a mintage of 1,194 pieces, but the issue is more elusive than that total would suggest. It is likely that many coins went unsold and were destroyed after the end of the year. The 2014 Guide Book indicates only 400-600 examples were actually distributed to collectors.

The present coin is an attractive Choice specimen, with broad square edges and razor-sharp definition on all design elements. The original red surfaces show just a few hints of brown and one microscopic speck of carbon behind Lincoln's head. No large or distracting marks are evident and the pleasing matte surfaces are bright and appealing. Population: 33 in 64 Red and Brown, 39 finer (4/14).(Registry values: N1793)
