Description
1909 VDB Matte Proof Lincoln Cent
PR64 Red
The Rarest Lincoln Proof
1909 1C VDB PR64 Red PCGS. The 1909 VDB is the scarcest of
the matte proof Lincoln cents, and it is the first issue in the
series. Only 1,194 pieces were struck before Victor D. Brenner's
initials were removed from the lower-reverse periphery, creating a
second variety of the 1909 proof. The non-VDB coin was struck to
the extent of 2,618 pieces before the end of the year. Full Red
examples of the 1909 VDB proof are rare in all grades, with only 31
such pieces reported at PCGS. NGC lists just 17 Red coins, and both
grading services may reflect resubmissions (3/18).This near-Gem is one of only a handful of full Red coins that we have offered in recent years. The strike is razor-sharp and the rims are squared, leaving no doubt as to the proof origins of this coin. Matte surfaces display satiny copper-pink luster with only a few tiny pepper specks of carbon. Eye appeal is pleasing for the grade.(Registry values: N2998)
