1909 VDB Cent, PR65 Red and Brown
First Year Matte Proof, CAC
Old Green Holder

1909 1C VDB PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. The Lincoln cent debut in 1909 included a departure from a numismatic standard by adopting a matte proof finish in lieu of the traditional brilliant or mirror-finish. Mints had been examining techniques used with matte or "sand blast" proof finishes in other geographies, particularly Europe, throughout the 1890s. It was decided that the American public would prefer the chic matte proof finish, and the new Lincoln cent would introduce this dramatic change for the cent denomination in 1909.

This Gem proof in Red and Brown displays chestnut-brown wood-grain on copper-red mint, all which are radiantly illuminated on satiny luster. The devices are sharply struck and the overall quality is evident, readily affirmed by endorsement from CAC. A loupe shows a few tiny carbon flecks and a minor nick between Lincoln's chest and the date, otherwise this coin is seemingly flawless. Lincoln cent proof matte finishes ended with the 1916 issue, although later ones have used a less-granular satin finish. Housed in a PCGS generation 3.1 green holder, and only 14 finer Red and Brown examples are reported at PCGS (12/25).(Registry values: N2998)
