Description

1909 VDB Lincoln Cent, PR66 Red and Brown
First-Year Matte Proof Issue

1909 1C VDB PR66 Red and Brown NGC. A small mintage of 1,194 matte proof Lincoln cents was reported in 1909, but experts suspect only 400-600 examples were actually distributed. The coins all featured the designer's initials prominently on the reverse, apparently a cause of much controversy when the coins were issued. This delightful Premium Gem exhibits broad, flat borders, with squared off edges and sharply detailed design elements. The original red surfaces have mellowed to light brown and magenta in many areas, but no mentionable distractions are present and the subtle matte luster remains strong.(Registry values: N4719)
