1909 VDB Cent, PR66 Red CAC
Just 3 Finer at PCGS

1909 1C VDB PR66 Red PCGS. CAC. Brilliant red surfaces have not mellowed one bit since 1909, but have taken on attractive orange and bright-yellow toning. Abrasions are nonexistent, as the Premium Gem grade suggests. Striking weakness is strong throughout, including on the all-important VDB, which sometimes shows weakness on the tops of those letters.
As all U.S. coin collectors know, the Lincoln Cent was introduced in 1909, and a mid-year design change created two design types for the year. The original variety, introduced on August 2, 1909, had designer Victor David Brenner's initials, VDB, at the bottom of the reverse. However, at the direction of Secretary of the Treasury Franklin MacVeagh, the initials were removed after just 10 days, and the reverse rim was reduced slightly as well.
In 1909, the Mint made 5,987 Proof cents: 2,175 of the Indian Head design, 1,194 VDB Lincoln Cents, and 2,618 non-VDB Lincoln Cents. While the VDB is the rarest of these three, its true rarity is understated. Surviving populations suggest that many of these coins failed to reach numismatic circles, thus meaning that the mintage figures understate the true rarity of this issue.
The introduction of the Lincoln Cent also brought with it a new Matte proofing process. Rather than the brilliant Cameo contrast of the Indian Head series, Lincoln Cent proofs of this issue exhibit a grainy appearance with mirror-like edges and flat rims. The present offering is simply one of the finest representatives of this new proofing process. Just 22% of PCGS's certifications gained the coveted Red designation, and of these, a sole 66+ and two 67s are the only finer certifications. This makes the present offering an undeniable Registry Set coin. PCGS Population: 7 in 66 (1 in 66+), 2 finer (4/26). CAC: 5 in 66, 2 finer (4/26).
