1914 Cent, PR68+ Red CAC
Sole Finest Matte Proof Lincoln Cent

1914 1C PR68+ Red PCGS. CAC. Beautiful red surfaces have not mellowed one bit since 1914, and contain lovely steel highlights. Strike is exquisite, and the surfaces are essentially perfect.
The year 1914 was an important one in world history, as it saw the outbreak of World War I, kicked off by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. In the American numismatic world, the most significant issues are the 1914/3 Buffalo nickel and the 1914-D Lincoln Cent. In amongst all of this history, however, one must not overlook the 1914 proof cent. This series was unpopular at the time due to its similarity to the circulation strikes, in stark contrast to the striking cameo proof Indian Head cents. As a result, the mintages plummeted from the first two years of production, 1909 and 1910, from 4,000 to the 2-3,000 level. In 1914, another large drop occurred, reaching just 1,365 coins, and 1915 and 1916 witnessed further drops before proof coinage was discontinued altogether.
Of this limited production run, the present offering is the sole finest available, and, in fact, is the sole finest proof Lincoln cent of the 1909-1916 period. Just four proof Lincoln cents from this period have achieved the 68 level: one 1909 non-VDB, one 1910, and two 1914s. Of these, just one of the 1914 coins has achieved the plus designation: the present offering (we are also offering the 1910 in PR68 Red as part of The Bolt Collection). Given the propensity for copper coins to mellow and lose their Red color over time, and for the coin's 112 year old age, its exquisite state of preservation should not be understated, particularly for Registry Set collectors. PCGS Population: 2 in 68 (1 in 68+), 0 finer (4/26). CAC: 1 in 68, 0 finer (4/26).
