Description

1936 Mercury Dime, PR68
Delightful Peripheral Toning

1936 10C PR68 ★ NGC. Examples of this issue are always in demand due both to their low mintage and to their status as the first year of the proof emissions. (Although Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia has made some claims concerning the existence of early [1916-17] proofs, no such examples have ever been certified at either service.)

The present piece, in addition to its pristine preservation, justly merits the Star designation awarded by NGC for exceptional eye appeal. Here the award-winner is the stunning peripheral patina in shades of emerald, amber, and cerise, with the occasional dollop of violet. This piece is one of only two PR68 coins at NGC and the only one with a Star designation; none are finer (6/15).
