Description

1936 Mercury Dime, PR68
The Sole Finest at PCGS
Housed in an Old Green Label Holder

1936 10C PR68 PCGS. The 1936 is the debut issue in the seven-coin proof Mercury dime series and is also the rarest in high grade. This magnificent Superb Gem is not only the single finest at PCGS, but it is also encapsulated in an old green label holder. PCGS discontinued this particular holder type in 1995, meaning that this remarkable coin has been the unrivaled, single finest at PCGS for at least two decades. Two additional PR68 coins (one PR68 ★ ) are listed on the NGC Census. The Star-designated piece last realized $15,275 in lot 4004 of the ANA Signature sale (Heritage, 8/2015). The other NGC coin last appeared in one of our auctions a decade ago in lot 2090 of the Dallas Signature sale (Heritage, 11/2005), where it garnered $20,125. This old-time PCGS coin may well out perform both of the NGC specimens.

The strike is fully rendered on this piece, and the fields are deeply mirrored. Iridescent hues emerge from the peripheries, intruding upon near-brilliant centers. Close study with a loupe fails to reveal any perceptible flaws. Arguably one of the single most important proof Mercury dimes known.(Registry values: N4719)
