Description
1942 Dime, Vividly Toned PR69
Sole PCGS Mercury Dime in This Grade
CoinFacts Plate Coin
1942 10C PR69 PCGS. CAC. Mint records show 22,329 proof
dimes were struck in 1942, a year in which proof coins could be
ordered individually or as complete sets. All of the proof coins
received a Brilliant Proof finish, and true cameo proofs for the
year are essentially nonexistent. If purchased as a set or with
other coins, each individual coin was packaged in a separate
cellophane sleeve, and multiple coins were then stapled together
and wrapped in tissue. Mint personnel then shipped the coins in
either a box or envelope, depending on the size of the order. It is
interesting to speculate how such rudimentary packaging might have
resulted in the fantastic toning on this near-perfect Superb Gem
dime, and how it escaped unblemished into a collector's hands.A crescent of fiery red and brilliant gold decorates the rear of Mercury's cap. (Yes, we know it is Liberty, but here it appears to be Mercury, messenger of the gods, in a hurry to deliver an important communication.) Pale jade and sandy-tan shows in other areas of the obverse, with the profile largely untoned otherwise. The eye appeal is simply incredible, as the grade implies. More of the same palette appears on the reverse, even more extensively, and the strike and preservation are absolutely impeccable.
This PR69 Mercury dime with the CAC green approval sticker will be hotly contested at auction. This is the only PR69 Mercury dime of any date certified at PCGS. There are no others. A type coin of immense importance. This piece is also the PCGS CoinFacts plate coin. Bring your most liberal bids to capture this prize.(Registry values: N2998)
