Description

1878 8TF Morgan Dollar, PR64+ Cameo
Doubled Die Reverse

1878 8TF $1 PR64+ Cameo PCGS Secure. CAC. VAM-14.3, Doubled Die Reverse. The 8TF 1878 proof Morgan dollar is a less often seen issue overall, but becomes particularly elusive in Cameo grades. This Plus-designated Choice example is struck from the VAM-14.3 die pairing, which shows the reverse boldly die doubled throughout the wreath and peripheral legends. On the obverse, the date is lightly recut north and several faint die polishing lines in the recesses of Liberty's cap confirm the attribution. This issue had a limited mintage of an estimated just 500 coins before the reverse was modified to the 7TF motif, one of the lowest proof mintages in the Morgan dollar series.

This piece is needle-sharp on the eagle's breast and talons and the hair above Liberty's ear. The mirrored fields are free of distractions and display subtle lavender-gray and champagne toning which accentuates the cameo appearance. There is a thin ribbon of deep blue along the obverse rim below the date. Population: 7 in 64 (2 in 64+) Cameo, 6 finer (7/15).(Registry values: N2998)
