Description

    1885 Morgan Dollar, PR69 Cameo
    Finest Certified Example
    Virtually Perfect Coin

1885 $1 PR69 ★ Cameo NGC. The 1885 proof Morgan dollar boasts a fairly generous mintage of 930 pieces, with two different obverse dies and a single reverse used to strike the entire production. This coin represents the VAM-5 variety, with the second 8 and the 5 in the date repunched. The repunching is strongest on the base of the 5.
The 1885 is reasonably available in the context of proof Morgan dollars, but Q. David Bowers notes "high-grade unimpaired, uncleaned coins are elusive." While this date is not difficult to find with cameo surfaces, the field/device contrast is seldom profound.
The present coin is the single finest certified example of this date, with incredible eye appeal and the highest available technical quality. The design elements are fully struck, with even the usual problem areas like the hair above the ear and the eagle's breast feathers fully brought up. It is difficult to see why this coin is not designated as an Ultra Cameo, because the black-on-white cameo flash of this piece is among the most dramatic we have seen. The devices are richly frosted and the fields show bright mirrors of unfathomable depth. Even close inspection with a glass reveals no mentionable hairlines or contact marks. The surfaces are completely brilliant and free of toning. This coin ranks with the finest proof Morgan dollars of any date, and should find a home in the finest collection or Registry Set. Census: 1 in 69 ★ Cameo, 0 finer (11/11).
