Description

1895 Dollar, PR62 Cameo
Among the
100 Greatest U.S. Coins

1895 $1 PR62 Cameo NGC. The "King of the Morgan Dollars" is ranked 30th on Jeff Garrett and Run Guth's most recent listing of the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (2015) just behind the 1870-S Seated Liberty dollar and ahead of the 1854-S presentation strike double eagle. The legend of the 1895 dollar is well-known. Mint records show 12,000 circulation strikes were produced, but none have ever surfaced and that total is now widely believed to be an accounting error. The only option available to collectors are surviving examples of the 880 proofs struck that year, but they are exceedingly scarce relative to the demand for them from the tens of thousands of active Morgan dollar specialists.

This PR62 example boasts seldom-seen Cameo contrast enhanced by the near-complete lack of toning. There are occasional golden accents near the rims, but the centers remain brilliant. Flashy and reflective fields exhibit myriad wispy lines that limit the grade. An excellent example of this famous rarity.(Registry values: N7079)
