PR62 Cameo 1895 Morgan Dollar

1895 $1 PR62 Cameo PCGS. Among the many thrice-told tales in numismatics is that concerning the total absence of business-strike Morgan dollars dated 1895 despite the recorded 12,000 struck, making the otherwise-unremarkable proof mintage of 880 pieces stand out in stark contrast to the remainder of the proof mintages in the series. In essence, it matters little today whether the business strike 1895s were accounting errors, whether they were melted in the Pittman Act furnaces of 1918, or for that matter whether they were secretly shipped to Timbuktu. Move on, folks, none exist today.
So it is that the 1895 Morgan dollars are a proof-only issue, the only such in a series that is almost certainly the most popular and widely collected in American numismatics. It is likely a conservative estimate that there at least 1 million collectors of Morgan dollars in the United States and worldwide today, from the most casual accumulators to the most feverish specialists. All of those collectors must compete for the several hundred or so proof 1895 Morgans that survive, probably a large portion of the original mintage.
The present PR62 Cameo 1895 Morgan will likely appeal to many a collector for whom the highest-graded pieces are out of reach, as it represents an excellent combination of value and aesthetic appeal. The surfaces are excellently detailed, particularly on the eagle's breast feathers. Both sides are appreciably contrasted, showing lightly frosted pale-silver devices. A thin veil of grayish toning covers well-mirrored but moderately hairlined fields, and the borders range from tan on the obverse to pale gold on the reverse. A contact mark on Liberty's jaw also contributes to the grade assigned. This piece is apparently produced from proof obverse die #2 according to the detailed diagnostics presented in the Bowers-Borckardt Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, one of four known obverse dies for the issue. Population: 12 in 62 Cameo, 59 finer (9/11).(Registry values: N7079)
