Description
Coveted 1895 Morgan Dollar, PR62
1895 $1 PR62 PCGS. In many ways, the market for the proof Morgan dollars of 1895 was underdeveloped for some years. In 1977, Walter Breen reported in his Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins that then contemporaneous auction records showed prices between $6,000 and $8,500, sizable for the time but incredibly low by today's standards. Wayne Miller, in his The Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook, wrote in 1982 that as recently as the 1970s, many collectors skipped the 1895 as an expensive luxury, but the bullish coin market, with its rising prices across the Morgan series, changed the game: "The increasing difficulty of assembling a gem set of Morgan dollars has made such a project challenging to wealthy collectors, who do not consider the price of an 1895 proof to be prohibitive. The price of this date has therefore risen as the popularity of the Morgan dollar series has increased."Even though attitudes toward the 1895 Morgan dollar have changed, the fact remains that few collectors of Morgan dollars ever obtain an example of the 1895 proof, which makes the presence of two specimens in The Beau Clerc Collection all the more extraordinary. This gold-inflected silver-gray piece displays excellent detail and strongly reflective fields. While the obverse shows minimal contrast, the reverse displays a modest cameo effect. Appealing despite the hairlines and occasional contact marks that populate the fields, and a desirable example of this most famous proof Morgan dollar issue.
