1895 Morgan Dollar, PR63
Legendary Philadelphia Series Key
Only 880 Proofs Produced

1895 $1 PR63 PCGS. VAM-4. Although the 1895 proof mintage is in the normal range for an 1890s Morgan dollar, the lack of any confirmed circulation strikes puts tremendous pressure on the 1895 proofs. No Morgan dollar collection is considered complete without an 1895 proof example -- making ownership of an 1895 proof a crowning achievement for any collector. While the possible existence of 12,000 circulation strikes has been debated by researchers and debunked by numerous experts, the fact remains that no confirmed circulation strikes have emerged in more than 130 years despite various Mint documents suggesting those pieces were indeed struck. If so, it is doubtful any circulation strikes left the Mint. If struck, it is likely they were melted at some point, or possibly they exist as simply a clerical adjustment by the Mint.

The Select proof offered here is a logical fit for a great many Morgan dollar specialists. On the obverse, the brilliant silver surfaces are flashy, deeply mirrored, and offer considerable contrast against Liberty's smoothly frosted portrait. The reverse is well-mirrored as well, although a transient area of Mint frost drifts downward across the eagle's left (facing) wing from STATES and varies in intensity depending on the viewing angle. This proof is fully struck on both sides and displays choice surfaces save for the noted fleeting interruption of mirroring on the reverse. As expected, the 1895 Morgan dollar proofs rank among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins, appearing as #55 in Jeff Garrett's 6th edition of that important reference.
