Description

1895 Morgan Dollar, PR64
Exquisitely Toned Key Date

1895 $1 PR64 PCGS. Stunning shades of electric-blue ring the peripheries of both sides of this magnificent Morgan Dollar, with this hue permeating into the central obverse, highlighting the recesses of the hair and illuminating the portrait. Grape and burnt-orange highlights exist in select places as well. The reverse contains a more varied array of shades, with a grape halo following the electric-blue at the periphery, and the center forming a nice peach-tinged silver with yellow and russet illuminating the design elements. This bevy of brilliant hues covers surfaces that are near-devoid of any abrasions, and the devices exhibit sharp definition on all design elements.
The 1895 is, of course, the key Philadelphia Morgan Dollar issue. No circulation strikes were made, as the mintage of 12,000 referenced in the Annual Report of the Director of the Mintwas later determined to be an accounting error. This leaves a mere 880 proofs as the only Morgan Dollar emissions from the Philadelphia Mint in 1895. In the context of this extremely popular series, this ramps up the collecting pressure on this issue to extreme levels. Resubmissions have majorly skewed the grading services' population reports, with PCGS and NGC's combined totals coming in at 20% more than the original mintage! However, the most common non-Cameo proof grade is PR62, meaning that the present offering is well above the average survivor of this important issue. Combined with its color and exquisite eye appeal, this present offering is an excellent candidate for Morgan Dollar collectors who wish to finally fill that final hole in their Philadelphia issues.
