Description

Sharply Contrasted 1896 Dollar, PR67 Cameo

1896 $1 PR67 Cameo NGC. Proof dollars from 1896 are among the most attractive in the series. This was perhaps best stated by Wayne Miller:

"The proofs from 1896-1898 evidence the most awesome cameo contrast of any of the proof Morgans. Special care seems to have been taken during these years to maximize the depth of the mirror fields, and the whiteness of the devices."

Evidence of the care taken by Mint personnel can be seen by the presence of die polishing below and within Liberty's ear and scattered in a couple of polished areas in the lower part of the hair. This is a completely brilliant example that displays stark cameo contrast between the fields and devices on each side. The surfaces are essentially perfect with no noticeable marks. Census: 19 in 67 Cameo, 5 finer (6/10).(Registry values: N4719)
