1896 Dollar, PR67 Deep Cameo
Beautiful Proof Type Coin

1896 $1 PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. The Mint struck proof Morgan dollars to the extent of 792 pieces in 1896, distributing them to collectors as part of multi-denomination silver proof sets. The coins were well made, showing strong cameo contrast in many cases, with generally sharp strikes. The increase in strike quality in 1896 over the preceding few years' proofs conveniently coincided with a spike in interest within the numismatic community about the design of the coin, which was created by an article in the May 1896 Numismatist announcing the marriage of the woman believed to have been the model for the Liberty bust, Miss Anna W. Williams. While some writers in modern times have questioned Williams' involvement with Morgan's silver dollar design, the story of her sitting for him on several occasions to render the head of Liberty is a romantic tale that has never been concretely refuted. The announcement of her marriage in the numismatic publication in 1896 adds a touch of that same romanticism to the proof Morgan dollars struck that year.

This Superb Gem Deep Cameo example displays dramatic contrast across white-on-black surfaces on each side. The strike is sharp, and the glimmering mirrors are pristine. Eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 11 in 67 (5 in 67+) Deep Cameo, 3 finer (5/24).(Registry values: N4719)
