Description
1896 Morgan Dollar, PR68 Deep Cameo
Superlative Quality and Appeal
1896 $1 PR68 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. In 1896 the Philadelphia
Mint applied all of its best equipment, knowledge, and human
expertise to the minting of exceptional silver dollars. Millions of
high quality business strikes entered commerce both at the time of
minting and in later years with release of bags from storage,
primarily in the 1950s.Virtually all proofs (762 pieces were minted) were equally above average in workmanship. Many were exceptional and a few, like this remarkable proof, were transcendently beautiful. The fact that two obverse dies were employed for the 762 proof strikings effectively doubled the number of early strikes, resulting in more proofs with incredibly deep fields and richly frosted devices.
While the 1896 date yields several extremely attractive proofs, only a handful of collectors will be able to acquire a proof of surpassing quality such as this Superb Gem. The fields, portrait, eagle, and overall surface quality are nearly flawless, with deep reflectivity embracing thickly cameoed devices. The coin is for all purposes untoned, with only the impression of brilliant, pure silver meeting the eye.
The most minute details are subject to scrutiny with a supremely white proof such as this, but no mentionable faults are evident. Further evaluation becomes subjective, with the only remaining question whether the coin matches its technical quality with outstanding eye appeal. It does, and apparently PCGS and CAC agree.
