Description

1897 Morgan Dollar, PR68 Cameo
Seemingly Perfect Surfaces

1897 $1 PR68 Cameo NGC. Of the two dies used to strike proof 1897 dollars, this one does not show repunching on the 18 in the date. But that is not the reason a collector would be interested in this coin. It is the phenomenal quality this piece represents that sells itself to the many interested buyers of high quality proof Morgans. For a three-year period from 1896 through 1898, quality reached its peak in the production of proof coinage. And that includes Morgan dollars. This is a stunning example. The coin is brilliant and the fields are deeply reflective with a significant amount of mint frost over the devices that provides cameo contrast. We just do not see any flaws on either side of this magnificent proof. Census: 8 in 68 Cameo, 0 finer (2/10).
