    1899 Dollar, PR67+ Deep Cameo
    Essentially Perfect Surfaces
    Finest Certified at PCGS

1899 $1 PR67+ Deep Cameo PCGS. The 1899 dollar has always been a popular date for collectors, both as a circulation strike issue and as a proof. Business strikes are popular with collectors because of the low reported mintage of only 330,000 pieces, but it has long been rumored that many more were struck than this low number. Proofs are average in quantity produced for the era with 846 pieces struck. However, quality varies from coin to coin and is nowhere as consistent as the three previous years. This is easily seen by the number (or rather lack thereof) of Deep Cameo examples at this lofty level, only two pieces have been so graded at each service (3/13). Lower grade Deep/Ultra Cameo coins are not significantly more available either.

This particular coin is, however, comparable in overall quality of production to the proofs from the 1896-1898 era. The fields are equally deep in mirrored reflectivity. The devices are heavily frosted as well, and the contrast between the fields and devices yields the stark contrast necessary for a Deep Cameo designation. Each side is free from any post-striking defects, at least we have not seen any that are worthy of comment. In the way of pedigree identifiers, there are several interesting ones. It appears that several short threads or pieces of lint were struck into the planchet around star 2 on the obverse. Usually such debris falls away from the coin after striking, but here they are firmly imbedded in the coin. Each side is essentially brilliant, one has to search for any trace of color. Among PCGS-certified dollars of this date, this is the finest Deep Cameo graded.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 27ZX, PCGS# 97334)
