Description
1922 High Relief Matte PR67 Peace Dollar
The Finest of Less Than a Dozen Known
1922 $1 High Relief Matte PR67 NGC. The 1922 matte proof
Peace dollar is an exceedingly rare issue, with perhaps no more
than a dozen pieces extant from an uncertain, but similarly tiny
mintage. The difficulty of striking large numbers of high relief
Peace dollars for circulation in the previous year led to second
thoughts from Mint officials about mass production of a similar
issue for 1922. Of course, the decision was eventually made to
rework the original design in lower relief. Not only are these elusive matte proofs struck in high relief, but the surface texture is entirely different than regular issue silver dollars from this year. This specimen has medium steel-gray color with a faint suggestion of golden patina and numerous microscopic flecks of deeper charcoal toning. The striking details are needle-sharp and the immaculate surfaces are free of hairlines, shiny spots, or abrasions. The multitude of tiny toning flecks and pristine surface quality point this piece in the direction of Paramount's section of the Auction '85 Sale (number 5 on the roster below), but it is a small, round planchet flake between R and T of LIBERTY along the obverse border that assures the pedigree of this outstanding, finest certified specimen as being the former Philadelphia estate coin. Census: 1 in 67, 0 finer (11/13). The roster below may include some duplication.
