    Description

    1837 Reeded Edge Half, PR62
    The Only Certified Proof

1837 50C Reeded Edge PR62 NGC. The 1837 is an extremely rare Reeded Edge proof half dollar with only three or four known specimens, from a small but unknown mintage. This is the second appearance of this specimen in our sales, and just one other proof appeared in a Stack's sale in October 2004.
Splashes of reddish-gold dominate both sides, and occasional whispers of electric-blue and lavender gravitate to the margins. The bold definition on the design elements is the result of a sharp strike, and luminous surfaces reveal some light, inoffensive hairlines interspersed with die polish lines in the fields. A faint scratch between stars 5 and 6, along with a minute contact on Liberty's neck, serves to identify the coin. Overall, a sharp piece with nice eye appeal.
NGC has certified this proof example, along with another 1837 half dollar that they describe as Specimen 65, while PCGS has never certified a proof. This piece is the only certified proof 1837 half dollar known to the grading services (11/12).

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
