Description

    1968 No S Roosevelt Dime, PR68 Cameo
Only Two Dozen Pieces Estimated Extant

1968 10C No S PR68 Cameo PCGS. Ex: Eric Kreuter Collection. The June 28, 1968, edition of Coin World announced the discovery of this rare modern Mint error. Created by a failure to affix the mintmark to one of the proof dies for this year, the 1968 No S was found in the Mint Bureau's sealed plastic containers as part of proof sets. In the 1988 Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Coins, the author opines that approximately six specimens are known. A number of other pieces have been discovered in the intervening years, and today it is estimated that some two dozen pieces may be extant. This is one of only three Cameo-designated examples at PCGS (none have been certified as Deep Cameo, 2/13), and it is a bright, nearly untoned proof with just the faintest trace of pale golden patina present. Razor-sharp striking definition occurs throughout, the frosty finish over the devices contrasting markedly with deep field mirrors. Essentially blemish-free with all the eye appeal one would expect for the assigned grade. To add even more to the coolness factor, the 1968 No S dime is listed as #3 in Scott Schechter and Jeff Garrett's 100 Greatest Modern Coins.
