1968 No S Dime, PR68
Famous Modern Rarity

1968 10C No S PR68 PCGS. The 1968 No S proof Roosevelt dime is a momentous rarity, ranked third among the 100 Greatest U.S. Modern Coins by Scott Schechter and Jeff Garrett (2011). The Mint transitioned away from the production of Special Mint Sets in 1968, returning to traditional proof coinage with one exception: Proofs would be struck at the San Francisco facility and bear the S mintmark. Nearly everything went according to plan, and more than 3 million proofs were struck. However, a mixup resulted in non-mintmarked dies being sent from Philadelphia to California, where they were inadvertently employed in the striking of a small quantity of No S dimes. S-mint officials apparently recognized the problem early on; few pieces got out. It is believed that only two dozen or so examples are extant.

This is an essentially flawless Superb Gem representative of the rarest No S proof dime. Pristine fields are profoundly reflective, and the devices are expectedly sharp. These proofs always generate spirited bidding, and we expect no less from this lot. Population: 18 in 68 (1 in 68+), 0 finer in non-Cameo (10/17).
