Important PR68 1968 No S Dime

1968 10C No S PR68 PCGS. Proof production resumed in 1968 after a three-year experiment with special mint sets. San Francisco took over the duty of proof coinage from Philadelphia, and the S mintmark was supposed to appear on all proofs, moved to the obverse. The very first year, however, one proof dime obverse die failed to receive a mintmark, and some (but not many) coins struck from the die made it past all mint quality control inspectors. The dime is the smallest diameter circulating coin, and was prone to the missing S error, which happened again to the dime in 1970, 1975, and 1983. Now, the mintmark is hubbed, and the era of No S proof sets is over. This is a brilliant and crisply struck Superb Gem of this rare error. The portrait has a hint of frost and contrasts slightly with the glassy field. Population: 5 in 68, 0 finer (8/08).(Registry values: P1)
