Description

    1968 No S Dime, PR68
    First No S Proof Issue

1968 10C No S PR68 PCGS. Standard practice was to place the mintmark on the reverse of branch mint coins until 1964, with only a few exceptions. However, beginning in 1968, mintmarks were moved to the obverse, usually near the date. In 1968 and a few again in various later years, the S mintmark was left off of proof dies. The key is that those were proof-only issues that were sold as part of complete proof sets. There have probably been instances of mintmarks left off of business strike dies, but how would you know? The first No S proof coins were the dimes of 1968. A small number of lucky collectors who ordered sets that year received the special sets, and word quickly spread in the hobby that all 1968 proof sets required examination. PCGS and NGC have certified a mere 35 1968 No S proof dimes in all grades, indicating the extreme rarity of these coins. This example has deeply mirrored nickel-gray proof surfaces with a hint of peripheral champagne toning. Population: 7 in 68, 0 finer (12/13).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 27F3, PCGS# 5245)

    Weight: 2.27 grams

Metal: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel (Over Copper Center)
