    Description

    Elusive 1907 Proof High-Relief Twenty

1907 High Relief PR 63 NGC. Saint-Gaudens' High Relief design, similar to the Extremely High Relief but struck in lower relief, similar to the regular-issue pieces. However, there are several subtle differences: 1. the capital building is larger, 2. the first M in the date is very close to Liberty's drapery, 3. there are 13 rays in the sunburst on the reverse, 4. the fields are less steeply basined than the Extremely High Reliefs and the borders are round, not wire-edged, and 5. the first U of UNUM shows signs of recutting on the inner right edge (unviewable while housed in an NGC holder).
It is unknown how many proofs of this type were actually struck as there are no mint records to document production figures. The surfaces are satiny and appear to be similar to the Roman Finish as was used on the 1908 proof issues. For pedigree purposes, two contact marks are seen on Liberty's left thigh and right knee, and two tiny edge bumps are at the base of the reverse. Also, there is a small copper-colored alloy spot to the left of the U of UNITED. An extremely important opportunity for the collector of proof U.S. gold coins. (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9136)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
