Impressive Gem Matte Proof 1908 Saint-Gaudens

1908 $20 Motto PR65 PCGS. A magnificent example of this rare and sought-after first year issue. Only 101 proofs were struck, and while the 1908 is the most frequently encountered date in the series of Saint-Gaudens Twenties, it would be a gross misnomer to call it a common date. There were two varieties of matte finish used, a lighter finish (only 3 known) and the darker finish (the type usually seen). This piece is the darker khaki color variety and its surfaces very closely resemble the lower denomination coins from this year with their coarse grain finish. While others have estimated that far fewer proofs are known today of this date, we believe that somewhere between 55 and 65 pieces may still be extant in all grades. The surfaces on this absolute Gem specimen are almost totally free from shiny spots, blemishes, or hairlines. A trivial contact mark is noted on the rock directly down from the right edge of Liberty's gown, being visible only under magnification. The coin's pristine quality is somewhat endangered by numerous flecks of plastic between the first generation holder and the coin. Whoever the proud new owner is, we would strongly recommend that it be reholdered. An important and very attractive proof that will undoubtedly generate much attention from gold enthusiasts. Population: 14 in 65, 1 finer (12/04).

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
