    Description

    Exceptional 1908 Premium Proof

1908 $20 Motto PR66 NGC. The second 1908 Proof double eagle that we offer out of the Phillip Morse Collection exhibits a somewhat coarser-textured surface. It is also a little lighter in color, displaying a sparkling brass-like appearance. Like its counterpart in the previous lot, it is boldly impressed throughout the design elements--the Capitol building, the olive branch, the leaves beneath the rock, and the eagle's wing feathers all reveal excellent definition. The surfaces are equally well preserved and impressive and show strong visual appeal as well as the expected technical perfection. In fact, this coin exceeds what one might expect in terms of technical preservation as it is very nearly flawless. Census: 28 in 66, 9 finer (9/05).

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
