    Stunning 1908 Superb Gem Proof

1908 $20 Motto PR67 NGC. Only 101 proofs of the 1908 were struck, and as stated in the introductory section, while it is the most frequently encountered date among the eight issues in the proof series, it would be a gross misnomer to call it a common issue. As we indicated previously, we believe there are between 55 and 65 pieces extant in all grades. NGC has certified just seven pieces in PR67, the grade of the Morse specimen offered in this lot, and a mere two specimens finer. PCGS has seen no coins above MS66 (9/05).
The present coin displays the typical matte (or "sandblast") surfaces that have a mustard-gold color. As we mentioned in the introductory page, this type of finish was not looked upon with favor by contemporary numismatists because of its overall "dull" appearance. Most present-day collectors, of course, find it very attractive and appealing. The design elements are nicely impressed, with no areas of weakness. The surfaces on both obverse and reverse are virtually perfect, as close scrutiny under a glass reveals no mentionable contact marks.

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
