Stunning 1910 Proof 68 Double Eagle

1910 $20 PR68 NGC. Like the smaller denominations of gold coins from 1910, the mintage for proof twenties is unusually large when compared to other proof Saint-Gaudens issues. It was recorded that 167 pieces were struck, but this number is just not meaningful when trying to determine the actual rarity of this date. Surely a large number must have been melted at a later date. As we indicated in the introductory writeup of the 1910 proof double eagle, our experience points to between 40 and 50 extant examples. Based on the certified population, most of these are in the PR64 to PR66 grade levels. Only two PR68s have been seen, both certified by NGC. One of these reposed in the Phillip Morse Collection, and is presented in the current lot.
This specimen displays the bright Roman gold finish used on the 1909 and 1910 proofs. Its yellow-gold surfaces are imbued with whispers of light mint green and orange, and all of the design elements are exquisitely struck. Both obverse and reverse are immaculately preserved, displaying no mentionable abrasions or copper stains. All in all, this is a most beautiful and stunning coin that is virtually perfect. Even the most discriminating connoisseur of Saint-Gaudens coinage could not help to be awed by this stunning example.
